Caramel Apples

In honor of our blog the Apple Varietal I thought I would share with you a fun apple recipe.  It wouldn’t be fall without a candy or caramel apple.  This simple recipe will allow you to have the fall carnival favorite at home without the pastry degree for making caramel. Most likely the hardest part will be unwrapping the caramels!

You’ll need:

24 oz. Caramels (don’t forget to take the wrapping off!!)

4 Tbsp Whole milk

10 orchard fresh apples (no wax), washed and dried, stem removed, with sturdy wooden or paper stick pushed into the core

How to:

1. Line baking sheet with wax paper.

2.Melt caramels together with milk in a deep (you’ll be dipping in there) microwave safe bowl on high for 30 seconds, remove, stir, return to microwave for another 30 seconds.  Repeat until completely melted and smooth; make sure you stir in between each round so that the caramel doesn’t burn.

3. Dip each apple into the hot caramel making sure to cover the apple entirely. Pull out and hold above the bowl for a few moments to allow excess caramel to drip off.  Place apple on wax paper. Repeat for the rest of the apples.

4.OPTIONAL- You can dip your caramel apples in a variety of toppings including peanut pieces, coconut flakes, almond slices, mini chocolate chips or whatever you would like.  Give the apple a moment to set before dipping into other topping as dipping too soon may cause the toppings to pull the caramel off the apple.
